The Thame Valley Viaduct is a flagship component of the HS2 high-speed rail line, spanning the floodplain of the River Thame near Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. Designed to carry trains at speeds up to 225 mph (360 km/h), the viaduct will be among the most advanced civil engineering structures on HS2’s Phase 1 route.
Rapid-EPS was selected (via distributor Brand Access) to supply edge protection systems suited to the unique structural and safety requirements of viaduct and deck construction. Our Lattice Girder Plank Post and Rapid Panels played a critical role in delivering safe working conditions at height and over water.
Project Overview
Purpose & Design Considerations
- The viaduct crosses a flood-prone area, so elevation, robust hydraulics, and resilience are essential.
- To reduce carbon impact and improve efficiency, the design uses prefabricated modular elements (piers, beams, deck panels) manufactured off-site and assembled like “Lego blocks.”
- The structural design minimizes in-situ complexity, improves quality control, and accelerates schedule.
Rapid-EPS’s Role & Edge Protection Contribution
Products Supplied
- Lattice Girder Plank Post (EU170 variant) – engineered for use with lattice girder planks and slab edges in complex viaduct and deck scenarios (especially over spans).
- Rapid Panels — modular guard panels that integrate with posts to form continuous edge protection systems on deck, slabs, parapets, and walkways.
These components were designed and implemented to meet the demanding conditions of viaduct construction: working at height, along long-span edges, and over water/floodplain.
Distributor & Coordination
The work was delivered through Brand Access, who coordinated supply, planning, and on-site logistics to align Rapid-EPS solutions with the HS2 contractor’s programme and safety protocols.
Challenges & Solutions
Challenge: Long spans & open edges
With spans of 25 m and open drop-offs between piers, edge protection needed to cover large unsupported lengths without compromising structural integrity.
→ Rapid-EPS panels and posts were designed to maintain strength over extended spans, with appropriate bracing and joint design.
Challenge: Working over floodplain / minimal ground clearance
Because the underside clearance is low (~3 m), many working zones are over water or wetlands. Installations had to be robust against soil settlement and environmental factors.
→ The use of modular prefabricated components reduced on-site adjustments, improved accuracy, and avoided excessive ground disturbance.
Challenge: Off-site prefabrication & modular construction interface
Since many structural elements (piers, beams, slabs) were manufactured off-site, edge protection had to match the modular geometry and allow safe handover during assembly.
→ Rapid-EPS’s modular posts, panels, and fixings were pre-aligned so they could be integrated into the prefabricated modules or adapted quickly during assembly phases.
Why It Matters
- The Thame Valley Viaduct exemplifies modern infrastructure: combining modularity, reduced carbon footprint, and efficient build methods.
- Edge protection for such a structure is not trivial — it requires engineered solutions that can adapt to span lengths, structural geometry, and site conditions.
- Rapid-EPS’s involvement demonstrates trust in our systems for high-profile, high-demand infrastructure projects.
Quick Facts
- HS2 trains will travel at up to 225 mph (360 km/h) over this viaduct.
- The viaduct is among the first in the UK to adopt full modular, off-site manufacturing for its structural elements.
- This approach yields carbon savings of ~1/3 compared to a conventional design.
The Thame Valley Viaduct is a showcase of what modern infrastructure can achieve — low environmental impact, modular construction, and enhanced safety built in from the ground up.
Rapid-EPS was honoured to supply Lattice Girder Plank Posts & Rapid Panels as part of this landmark project. Our systems helped maintain safe edge protection across complex spans, at risk zones, and with modular structural alignment.
